You spent months growing. Do not rush the final step. Drying and curing properly is what separates smooth, flavorful flower from harsh, grassy smoke. Here is how Potent Roots approaches it.
Drying: slow and steady
Hang branches upside down in a dark room with gentle airflow that does not blow directly on the plants. Aim for about 60 degrees Fahrenheit and 60 percent humidity. At those conditions drying usually takes about 7 to 14 days.
How to know it is dry
Small stems should snap instead of bend. The outside of the buds should feel dry to the touch while the inside still holds a little moisture.
Curing: where the magic happens
Trim the buds and place them in airtight glass jars, about three quarters full. For the first week, open the jars once or twice a day for a few minutes to let moisture escape. This is called burping. If the buds feel damp, leave the lid off a bit longer.
How long to cure
After the first week, burp less often. Two weeks of curing is a solid minimum. Many growers go four weeks or longer for even better flavor and smoothness.
Keep humidity in check
A small hygrometer inside the jar, or a two-way humidity pack, helps you keep things around 58 to 62 percent.
